Join NRCM for an Alpine Plant Hike on Saddleback Mountain on Wednesday, June 12!
The walk will be led Glen Mittelhauser from the Maine Natural History Observatory, who quite literally wrote the book on the plants of Baxter State Park (and others) and is a wonderful teacher and guide.
The event will start at 7:00 a.m. at the Saddleback Ski Area Base Lodge (976 Saddleback Mountain Rd, Rangeley, ME 04970). We will hike the ski trails to the Appalachian Trail, about two miles, where we will meet up with Glen for a walk to the summit, about one mile, while exploring Alpine plants and ecology.
This is about a 2.5-hour hike to the AT, then about 2 hours on the mountain, followed by lunch and about 2.5 hours back down. This is a challenging hike. There will be options for a longer hike to the Horn for those interested.
The pub at the base lodge should be open until 8:00 p.m. for an après-hike meal for those interested.
Please bring the following:
We'll be practicing Leave No Trace principles on the walk and will provide WAG bags for those in need.
If you'd like to stay overnight before the hike, there are plenty of options in Rangeley.
This event is free, but space is very limited. Reserve your spot by May 10!
Rain date for this event is Friday, June 14th.
