The current Administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt, has proven himself unfit to lead the federal agency that protects our public health, environment, and economy. During his past year in office, Pruitt has worked to silence scientists and derail dozens of environmental safeguards that protect our clean air, clean water, public lands, and climate. We need to remove Scott Pruitt from EPA and replace him with someone who will stand up for the American people rather than protecting pollutors. Sign our letter below.
If you're a scientist or doctor, please list your profession and affiliation so we can demonstrate that there is widespread support in the scientific community for the removal of Administrator Pruitt.
Dear President Trump:
We are writing to urge you to immediately remove Scott Pruitt as Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Over the past year, Mr. Pruitt has proven himself unfit to lead this important agency that protects our public health and the air, water, lands, and climate that are vital for our nation’s economy and the quality of life of all American citizens.
Prior to his confirmation as EPA Administrator one year ago, Mr. Pruitt served as Attorney General of Oklahoma, where he maintained extensive financial ties with the fossil fuel, electric utility, and chemical industries. These are among our nation’s biggest polluters. Since assuming his role as EPA Administrator, he has exhibited a consistent pattern: weakening safeguards that protect our health and environment from pollution emitted from these industries and many others. In addition, he has filled the top ranks of the EPA with lobbyists and lawyers who, like Mr. Pruitt, have spent their careers working to undermine environmental protection and the EPA.
The EPA has a long and established record of using science as the foundation for its action, enforcement, and policy. But Mr. Pruitt consistently rejects scientific data and advice from many of our nation’s top scientists working for the government and leading academic institutions. He has even been personally linked to deleting climate change information from EPA’s website.
We are particularly alarmed by Mr. Pruitt’s recent suggestion that climate change may be good for humanity. No reading of the scientific literature can possibly lead one to this conclusion. The consensus view presented in the National Climate Assessment, prepared by our nation’s top climate scientists, paints ominous trends for humans and our planet. Sixteen of the warmest years on record occurred in the last 17 years. Heat waves, fires, and drought have become more frequent. Sea levels are rising, as is coastal flooding. Our oceans are warming and getting more acidic, harming fisheries and the businesses, communities, and people that depend on them. As air temperatures rise, air pollution gets worse, raising risks of increased asthma attacks and premature death for those with respiratory difficulties. These are just some of the harms that could affect Americans and citizens around the globe, if we fail to reduce carbon pollution. We fundamentally dispute Mr. Pruitt’s notion that such impacts could be good.
Mr. Pruitt’s contempt for science and his determined effort to dismantle the EPA, supporting draconian budget cuts and reckless rollbacks of environmental and public health safeguards, are ample grounds for dismissal. We do not believe that Mr. Pruitt can be trusted to protect our nation’s health and environment, which is why we urge you to replace him with someone who can and will.
