The Kennebec River was once the most productive river in Maine, supporting Atlantic salmon runs in the hundreds of thousands, and runs of shad and river herring in the millions. Today, the future of the Kennebec River is at a critical point. Atlantic salmon are on the brink of extinction, and their survival depends on further restoration of the Kennebec. Four dams between Waterville and Skowhegan, owned by the international energy giant Brookfield Renewable Partners, stand in the way of a free and healthy Kennebec, blocking access to many miles of historic spawning and rearing habitat. Thankfully, the Maine Department of Marine Resources is recommending the removal of two dams to restore native fish populations.
Please join NRCM and our partners on Monday, April 26th from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. for a Zoom webinar to learn about this exciting opportunity to save the Atlantic salmon from the brink of extinction. You’ll hear from Maine scientists, fishermen and women, and a member of Maine’s tribal community. The event is free but registration is required.
Join us to hear from:
Nick Bennett – NRCM Staff Scientist
Jeff Reardon – Trout Unlimited Maine Chapter
Willie Grenier – Kennebec River fisherman
Mali Obomsawin – President – Bomazeen Land Trust
